ORANGE BEACH, Alabama — As the massive wildfire at Gulf State Park entered its fifth day, officials said the blaze did not grow beyond 700 acres overnight.
In the hours before Gov. Robert Bentley’s scheduled visit this afternoon, authorities were waiting for winds to die down enough to drop phosphorous bombs by helicopter in an attempt to burn the remaining fuel in the remaining smoldering areas.
“We’d like to complete that burnout more quickly so that everyone can get out of here and enjoy the July 4th weekend,” said Jerry Smith, a member of the Alabama Forestry Commission now acting as state spokesman for the multi-agency fire response.
Smith said the fire jumped its perimeter briefly on Tuesday evening to burn 3 acres, but the fire was quelled and the main blaze otherwise was kept within the boundaries that agencies set for it, he said.
