Fourth of July fireworks displays filled the skies across Alabama on Monday evening, despite widespread summer thunderstorms that boomed throughout the afternoon and evening hours. In most places, fireworks shows were able to go on as planned.

In Tuscaloosa, thousands poured into the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater along with the rain to celebrate the Fourth of July with classical music, F-16 flyovers and a massive fireworks display as part of the city’s Celebration on the River.

In Birmingham, the annual Thunder on the Mountain display at Vulcan Park went on as planned, lasting 20 minutes with plenty of red, white and blue — plus green, purple, happy faces and planets.

In Huntsville, the fireworks show at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center failed to go off on time, but passersby enjoyed a late show around 10:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the 9 p.m. show at Bridge Street went off without a hitch.

And down on Mobile Bay, spectators lined the Causeway and jammed the USS Alabama Memorial Battleship park to enjoy the rocket’s red glare at the city’s annual Fourth of July fireworks show. Because of the drought, this year’s pyrotechnics occurred over the water in Mobile Bay, framed perfectly by the old Navy warship.
