BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — A heavy rain falling this afternoon across the Birmingham area has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood warning for central Jefferson County through 7:30 p.m.
At 4:45 p.m., the weather service was reporting two to three inches of rain had fallen in the past hour.
Flash flooding is expected in Birmingham, Homewood, Irondale, Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Cahaba Heights and Kingston.
Significant flooding has been reported in Cahaba Heights.
Here are some other weather service storm reports:
• Six inches of rain were reported at the intersection of Sicard Hollow Road and Blue Lake Drive.
• Large hail was spotted at Liberty Park, near the Colonade shopping center on U.S. 280, in Mountain Brook and in Inverness.
People are encouraged to stay at home and use caution when driving.
