Former Alabama Governor Bob Riley was discharged Monday from a hospital in Fairbanks, Alaska, and has been transferred today to a Sarasota, Fla., hospital after receiving clearance from his doctors to make the trip.

Riley, 66, was injured in motorcycle crash June 27 on a highway north of Fairbanks. He was hospitalized for a week with broken ribs, a broken collarbone and a collapsed lung.

Riley said he and his family consulted with doctors in Alaska and Alabama, including Dr. Kirby Bland, the University of Alabama Birmingham’s chief of surgery. He said the physicians agreed it was best to move the former governor to Sarasota, where could be observed for a few days before being released to rest and recuperate with his family.

The Riley family owns a coastal condominium in Sarasota, and his wife, Patsy, had been on vacation there when Riley’s motorcycle accident occurred.  
 
“There is still significant pain, but I’m feeling much better,” Riley said in a written statement Tuesday. “I’m grateful for the excellent medical care I received in Fairbanks, and for the good Samaritans who picked me up after my fall and took me to the hospital. They truly were God-sent.

“I appreciate the outpouring of prayers and support from folks back home. I can’t tell you how much that has meant to me. I’m thankful I now have the opportunity to join my family at our place in Florida while I continue to heal.”
