BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — A former president of the local postal worker’s union has been indicted by a federal grand jury on a charge of embezzling union funds, the U.S. Attorney’s office in Birmingham said Wednesday.

Albert L. Gardner, 48, of Huntsville, is alleged to have stolen just over $12,000 from the American Postal Workers Union Local 359 from June 2006 to June 2007, according to U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance’s office.

The U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Labor-Management Standards, investigated the case and it is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Pat Meadows.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
