— This is the first in a series of summer vacation tips for readers who would like to go somewhere roughly a tankful of gas away. All come highly recommended as family-friendly destinations.
The corridors resounded with laughter. The blue and green tables at the Seaglass restaurant were packed. It was an especially lively time at the Golden Inn the weekend of May 21 and 22 — no doubt because the hotel was overflowing with good friends celebrating Girlfriends’ Weekend.
A regular occurrence at Avalon’s Golden Inn, the only resort on the South Jersey coast open 365 days a year, Girlfriends’ Weekend offers two nights’ deluxe west wing lodging, a Friday night welcome reception and gossip session, two complimentary cocktails, Friday and Saturday evening dinners from the a la carte menu and live entertainment with nonstop dancing, Saturday and Sunday morning breakfast buffets, free unlimited local and long-distance phone calls and free unlimited wireless Internet access.
Whew! Out of breath yet? It doesn’t stop here. The girlfriends also have their choice of various spa treatments (including facials and massage) and discount coupons to local shops. The theme during our weekend visit was “The Price Is Right” at a cost of $269 per girlfriend, based on double occupancy.
That weekend, more than 150 friends visited the Golden Inn for fun and frolic — not to mention a couple of wedding parties, also enjoying the resort’s amenities and legendary service. And the summer season has barely begun!
Two more girlfriends’ weekends are planned for June — “You Pick the Theme” for June 3 to 5 and “Surf’s Up” Beach Party for June 10 to 12, both at $279 per girlfriend, based on double occupancy. Other events are planned for July 8 to 10 and Aug. 26 to 28. Call the hotel toll-free at 866-343-6111 for particulars.
The inn’s wine weekends are also going well. According to Rick Odorisio, a resident of Bryn Mawr and vice president of Valley Forge Hotels (which owns the Golden Inn, as well as the Omni Hotel at Independence Park and the Embassy Suites at Chesterbrook), said that this spring’s wine weekend “was a home run. And we’re planning another, with a leading wine maker, this fall.
“But we’re very happy that our pre-sale numbers for this summer are ahead of last year’s. Signs of an economic recovery are there. We still have some openings for July and August, but we expect this to be a great summer at the inn.”
Odorisio points to the success of Chef Brett Hulbert’s tapas menu as one reason for the growing acclaim for the inn’s refurbished Seaglass restaurant, and he says he is proud of the value-driven menus of both Seaglass and Luigi’s, which he calls “our great family Italian restaurant.”
New at the inn this summer from the inn’s Beach Club, located between the outdoor pool and the wide beach just over the dunes, is a takeout service for beachgoers.
And for couples with small children, there’s a new childcare service for hotel guests and anyone dining at Seaglass. In the capable hands of restaurant managers April Millett and Dustin Burke, the sitting service called “The Dine the Kids Are Fine Package” will be available on Friday and Saturday evenings from 7 to 11 p.m.
At a cost of $8 per child per hour and $2 per hour for each additional sibling, parents can rest assured that they can enjoy their meal in comfort while their kids are in good hands.
Golden Inn General Manager Kevin Sterling said, “We take the worry out of finding a safe and fun environment for the kids by offering a designated area on site where parents can drop their kids off for up to four hours and they will be cared for by professional childcare specialists who have met rigorous criteria as part of Guardian Angels.” Continued…
According to Millet, there will be one attendant per four kids, who will meet in one of the hotel’s attractive meeting rooms, where they can enjoy their own dinner and snacks, games, books, movies, art projects and more.
Begun last summer on a limited basis, the service has been expanded this season and will be available from the end of June through Labor Day.
The inn also offers several specials and packages, including dance getaways, golf getaways, midweek bed-and-breakfast packages and more, not to mention conference facilities and attractive wedding packages.
Return visits are common. According to Odorisio, “What we’re finding is that people love our service and hospitality so much that they want to come back. We do a lot of customer service training. So it’s not surprising. Most of our guests can’t wait to come back.”
