Author: ARAB, Ala. – Governor Robert Bentley said Sunday that Alabama is a Level 1 disaster area comparable to Katrina and the World Trade Center after 9/11.
Touring storm damage near Arab Sunday, Bentley praised the state’s volunteer spirit and said even more volunteers are needed in the days and weeks ahead. Call “211″ to volunteer, or sign up for Madison County duty beginning today at the First Baptist Church on Governors Drive.
Bentley came to DeKalb and Marshall counties Sunday as he continues calling attention to all areas in the state hit by last week’s storms.
“One church where we had services, the church was completely gone and we had services on the slab,” Bentley said of DeKalb County.
The size and scope of the tornado outbreak continues to come into focus. For example, the National Weather Service said the storm that hit Arab was an EF-4 tornado with winds of 190 mph. It had a track 16 miles long and was a half-mile wide at one point.
