Trappe resident Gene Zvarick’s grandfather founded the borough’s annual Grange Country Fair to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his grange, Keystone Grange No. 2.
On July 30, the town will hold the fair for the 39th time, in a family-oriented day dedicated to recapturing the time when Trappe consisted of farmland.
“We’re supporting the tradition and values the grange was founded on,” said Zvarick, who has attended every fair. “It means a lot to us, and it’s important that it’s done properly.”
He has spent “an unlimited number of hours” advertising the event, gathering donations and money from sponsors and obtaining items for the raffle. But Zvarick enjoys the work.
“It’s wonderful,” he said.
The fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Waterworks Park, on First Avenue in Trappe. Events include local live entertainment, farm demonstrations, historic crafter demonstrations, a parade featuring antique vehicles and tractors, a petting zoo, a country flea market, a ceremony to name the Grange Fair Queen, a pet contest, pony rides, hayrides, a barbeque, ice cream and more.
“It goes back to what we used to have years ago,” Trappe Mayor Connie Peck said. “Farm life as it once was.”
One of the more unique events, Peck said, is “Cow Pie Bingo,” in which a cow walks around a grid and picks a number based on where it stops.
About 20 to 25 volunteers work the fair, attended by approximately 3,000 people throughout the day.
Keystone Grange No. 2 was founded in 1873 as a nonpartisan, nonsectarian fraternal organization. The grange is known throughout the county for its Farm City Dinner, held in November, and its flea markets.
“It’s a lot of fun, and I think the community just enjoys a quiet, nice day in the park,” Peck said. “It gives people some insight to how prior years were when this was farmland. This is a lot of history. Our community has changed quite a bit.”
