Habitat for Humanity in Mobile County will expand into Washington and Clarke counties, and in so doing becomes Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Alabama, officials said.

The name change also means a new website address, www.habitatswalabama.org, said Brenda Carson-Lawless, executive director and chief executive officer of the local Habitat affiliate. The new web address will take affect Friday, she said.

Lawless said that in 2008, the local Habitat board of directors developed a five-year strategic plan that included expanding their efforts into Washington and Clarke counties.

“It’s been a two-year process, and the plan is alive,” she said.

Habitat officials will open an office in Washington County, a ReStore and a construction warehouse, she said. The locations have not been selected, she said.

“Right now, our greatest need is land, and we’re seeking community partners,” Carson-Lawless said.

Habitat officials will hold a community meeting in June to discuss their plans with residents.

“We wanted to make sure that we grow our mission, and we wanted to be able to sustain ourselves before we went to serve an area of southwest Alabama that had not been served,” she said. “Through our research in both Washington and Clarke counties, (we found) there was such a great need due to the high level of poverty.”

Carson-Lawless said the plan is not to move into both counties at the same time, but to get a firm footing in Washington County and then move into Clarke County.

Habitat for Humanity in Mobile County started in 1989, and since then has built more than 200 houses for more 1,000 individuals, she said.

For more information or to help, call the office in Mobile at 251-476-7171, or send an email to blawless@habitatmobile.org. Her new email will be blawless@habitatswalabama.org when the new website takes effect, officials said.
