BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Nearly 2 inches of rain fell on parts of Jefferson County in the course of a single hour this evening, according to the National Weather Service.
Several reports were heard on Birmingham police and fire radios of people having to be rescued from their cars as they tried to drive through flooded streets.
Birmingham firefighters rescued a driver who was stranded in high water at the Messer-Airport Highway underpass at 31st street North.
A few more rain showers are likely later this evening, but flooded streets should soon be free of water, said weather service meteorologist Mark Rose.
“It typically retreats pretty quickly, about as quickly as it came,” Rose said of the flood waters.
Until then, drivers are urged to use caution.
