Cities in the Birmingham area report power lines and limbs down this afternoon as a result of high winds following a thunderstorm this afternoon.

Shortly after 4 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning until 4:45 p.m. for the Birmingham area. A storm passing through packed winds in excess of 60 miles per hour.

Downed lines have led to sporadic power outages in some areas. In addition to parts of Birmingham and Trussville, a meteorologist said there were also reports of downed trees and power lines in Blount, Etowah and Cherokee counties.

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 8 tonight.
