HOOVER, Alabama — The Hoover City Council approved the removal of asbestos from La Chateau Apartments and demolition of the complex, known as the Hartwood Apartments, at tonight’s meeting.

The Lunceford Group, based in Birmingham, had the winning bid with a price of $387,000.

The last tenants in the apartments moved out in March. City Executive Director Allen Pate said the asbestos abatement and demolition will begin in mid-August, and Lunceford Group will have 150 days to completely remove the building after that.

The complex that sits near a shopping center on Lorna Road was bought by the city in December 2010. The city paid $2.4 million for the complex, purchasing it from a Delaware-based investment group after it went into foreclosure in August that year.

The 136-unit complex was rezoned as a community-business district, making it possible for commercial development. Mayor Tony Petelos has received several calls from developers interested in the 8 ½ acre property. Interests include developing the site into retail stores and developing it into an office building, Petelos said. He also received a call from a developer wanting to build a hotel on the site.
