HUEYTOWN, Alabama — The Hueytown City Council tonight approved a $2 a month increase in garbage fees for city residents.

The increase is the first for Hueytown residents since 1998, although Allied Waste’s cost to the city for garbage collection has increased over the same time period, officials said.

The city had been absorbing the cost prior to tonight’s vote rather than increasing the fees for residents, Mayor Delor Baumann said. The fees will now cost homeowners $180 a year, or $45 a quarter.

In other action, the council approved the creation of an additional firefighter’s position in the fire department.

Also, the Hueytown police and fire departments received letters of commendation from Pleasant Grove public safety director Robert Knight.

The commendations thanked Hueytown police and fire for their aid in the city of Pleasant Grove following the April 27 tornado.
