HUEYTOWN, Alabama — Hueytown officials reminded residents tonight that household items such as mattresses and toilets should not be placed alongside the road for leaf and limb pickup.

Mayor Delor Baumann said officials are seeing more instances of such violations in the aftermath of the April 27 tornadoes. Although Hueytown wasn’t directly affected by the storms, Baumann said he believes some residents are trying to take advantage of the situation by having the city pick up the items along with leaf and limbs.

Under its ordinance, the city will pick up leaves, untreated wood and tree limbs of a certain length. Work done by contractors should be hauled away by contractors, officials said.

Baumann said the city will take a closer look at homes that violate the ordinance and violators could face fines.

“We’re going to be watching it closely, because its gotten out of hand,” he said.

In other action, the City Council had the first reading on an ordinance which will increase garbage fees for property owners by $2 a month. The fee is now $39 every three months. The increase would be the first in garbage fees in the city since 1998, officials said.
