Thanks to a $128,000 grant provided by the The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, The Greater Birmingham Humane Society has purchased a new emergency transport rig for tornado relief efforts.

The Humane Society accepts pets given to the society by owners who can no longer care for them and then attempts to place the pets with new owners.

According to Laura Golden, a spokeswoman for GBHS, local Humane Society shelters have taken in some pets from owners displaced by the storm and expect to have others. To avoid overfilling shelters locally, the Humane Society will sometimes transport animals to shelters in other locales where there is greater demand.

That’s often in the Northeast where there are spay and neuter laws. “They have a shortage of adoptable pets up there,” she said.

The rig will include space for animal transport cages, an on-board veterinary work space, and room for the storage of pet care supplies.

“It is basically a mobile shelter on wheels,” Golden said. “When we start to get full, this is an alternative to euthanizing pets,” she said. “We have shelters we work with and trust. Most of them are in the Northeast.”
