HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — Businesses from banks to grocery stores are making contributions and organizing blood drives and other volunteer efforts to help areas affected by Wednesday’s storms. 

• BB&T will sponsor a blood drive with the American Red Cross at the bank’s Madison Square branch at 4955 University Drive in Huntsville on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, contact BB&T at 205-445-2200.

The bank’s other relief efforts include shipments of water, ice, tarps and cleaning supplies to local American Red Cross locations in the affected areas, including the Huntsville area. BB&T is also making a contribution to the American Red Cross to establish the BB&T-Alabama Tornado Relief Fund. Those who would like to contribute to the fund should contact their local American Red Cross office.

• Publix Super Markets customers may donate any amount to aid in tornado relief by adding it to their grocery totals when checking out at Publix registers. Collected money will be channeled through the American Red Cross and designated specifically for disaster relief efforts. The program will continue for a few weeks, based on customer response.

Publix Super Markets Charities is contributing $100,000 to the American Red Cross for relief efforts for the areas affected by the tornadoes.

• Wells Fargo is contributing $225,000 to support the efforts of the American Red Cross in affected areas in Alabama and Georgia.

• Belk has committed $200,000 to the American Red Cross to aid the storm victims. The contribution, to the American Red Cross Spring Storms Fund, includes a $100,000 grant to support efforts in Alabama, $50,000 to support efforts in North Carolina and an additional $50,000 grant to help with immediate and long-term recovery efforts.

• Sears will collect donations for Rebuilding Together, a nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership, to help rebuild homes in Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia. Donations are being accepted at all Sears stores in Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia. Sears will offer residents of these four states a number of discounts on certain merchandise until May 20.

• Regions Bank has contributed $1 million to tornado relief efforts. In addition, donations for the American Red Cross’ Tornado Disaster Relief Fund will be accepted from the public at all Regions Bank branches in 16 states. Regions is also partnering with various local agencies in areas affected by the storms to provide volunteer assistance.
