HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — Dr. Daniel Brigman, Brett Springston and Dr. Casey Wardynski were chosen Friday evening as the finalists in the bid to replace Dr. Ann Roy Moore, superintendent of Huntsville’s school system.

Brigman is superintendent of the Macon County School System in Franklin, N.C.; Springston is the superintendent of the Brownsville Independent School District in Brownsville, Texas; and Wardynski is chief financial officer of the Aurora (Colo.) school system.

The announcement was made after Gail Kiker, clerk for the school board, counted board members’ ballots. Each member was asked to pick three of the seven candidates the board interviewed over the past two days.

Brigman, Springston and Wardynski will return for additional interviews and community forums on May 23, 24 and 25. The exact schedule has not yet been set.

Board member Jennie Robinson said each day has been structured to include as much interaction with the public as possible. The candidates will meet with local principals’ and teachers’ associations for breakfast and will go on a tour of Huntsville.

After that, they will meet with various community groups at Huntsville High School. They will also have a chance to meet with system consultant Dr. Ed Richardson to learn more about the financial crisis the system is working itself out of.

Each will also go through a second two-hour interview with the school board.

Rating sheets will be made available for the public to comment on each candidate, Robinson said.

Board members said all seven of the candidates brought a wealth of experience, as well as many great ideas for Huntsville’s schools.

“I think we’ve all learned a lot,” said David Blair.

The candidates for superintendent also included Dr. Barry Carroll, superintendent of Limestone County Schools; retired Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Frank Libutti, chief operating officer of Global Solutions 3D; Dr. Eric King, superintendent of Muncie Community Schools in Muncie, Ind.; and Beth Wright, superintendent of Florence County School District 3 in Lake City, S.C.
