IRONDALE, Alabama — The Irondale City Council tonight voted to raise the mayor and council’s pay, but not until the next term.

Effective Nov. 5, 2012, the council president’s pay will be $1,300 a month; the president pro-tem’s pay will be $1,150; and council members’ pay will be $1,000. All council members make $700 a month now.

The council’s vote also will mean the mayor in the next term will get $42,900 a year instead of the current $39,600.

Some city officials said the raise is warranted because of an increased workload for the mayor and councilors over the years.

Councilman Bob Saunders, who proposed the raises, said another reason why the mayor and council deserve the increase is because the 2010 Census reflects the city having a population at 12,349.

State law calls for cities with more than 12,000 people to change their governing makeup from a council which includes a voting mayor to a council headed by a president and vice president and the mayor having veto power. The change in government will be effective after the next election.

Councilman Terry Bearden voted against the raise. Bearden said he does not think the council should be getting another raise until raises are given to city employees.

Other council members said they are discussing raises for employees, but that will be decided during the upcoming budget hearings.
