SEMMES, Alabama — The Semmes municipal election may not be until June 28, but citizens of Mobile County’s newest city already know that Judy Hale will be Semmes’ first mayor.

Hale, who led the efforts to incorporate Semmes, told the Press-Register tonight that the Mobile County Probate Court told her earlier in the day that no one filed to run against her. Today was the deadline to qualify for the election.

Hale said she was unsure whether she would begin her term as mayor before or after the 5 at-large council seats are determined.

Hale said 6 people qualified to seek the council seats – David Baker, Teresa Bonner, Mary Calhoun, Phillip Dodd, Jerry Shirey and Howard Smith. Voting will take place at Semmes First Baptist Church.

The first term of the mayor and council will be for just 1 year, Hale said, in order to align future Semmes elections with presidential years like nearly all other Alabama municipalities.

Mobile is an exception; its city elections are in the year following each presidential election. Mobile’s next city election is in 2013.

Hale said the mayor and council will serve the 1-year term without pay, because Alabama law requires a sitting city government to set pay for its subsequent councils and mayors.

Hale said census figures turned in to the probate judge set the city’s initial population at 2,987.
