BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Jefferson County employees this afternoon began receiving layoff notices. Department heads began picking up letters from the human resources director and will be distributing them to employees throughout the afternoon.
However, county officials said the number of layoffs may not come close to the 964 workers they predicted would have to be placed on unpaid administrative leave to slash $12.3 million from the budget through Sept. 30, the end of fiscal 2011.
So far, 546 letters have been prepared for workers who will be placed on leave, according to the county’s Human Resources Department. That number is down from the original estimate because Sheriff Mike Hale decided to place his entire office on a reduced 32-hour workweek instead of laying off 148 workers. Also, the budget management office said the original number included 177 vacant positions.
County leaders were trying to determine whether any additional layoffs would be needed or whether department heads found ways to reduce expenses to avoid some layoffs. So far, the layoffs have not included County Commission support staff.
