On a hilltop in Concord today, Mike Dabbs was working alongside family and friends to pick up the fragments of his shattered home.
“It’s fine. I’m happy,” Dabbs said, managing a smile before admitting: “Some things are pretty nerve-racking.”
His higher elevation on a Jefferson County hilltop gave Dabbs a perfect view of the tornado as it churned up the lives and homes of his friends and neighbors in the valley before heading straight for him on Wednesday.
He and his daughter rushed into the basement where his wife, son-in-law and grandchild were already hiding.
The adults formed a human cocoon around the baby.
“I prayed to God to protect us, but if he had to take somebody, take me,” Dabbs recounted.
All were spared. The house was not.
Dabbs knows it could have been worse.
He hasn’t decided if he will rebuild or not.
