MOBILE, Alabama — Homicide detectives have identified the man who died in an exchange of gunfire Friday afternoon west of Mobile as 18-year-old Justin Lamar Hughes.

No other information was made available about the victim.

According to a news release on Friday, police responded to a report of shots fired and a man down in the intersection of Dawes and Johnson roads about 4:45 p.m., said police spokesman Officer Christopher Levy. Upon arrival, officers found Hughes with an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to Providence Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Levy said preliminary results of an investigation indicated that Hughes became involved in an altercation when a 48-year-old man confronted him about a stolen bicycle. At that point, investigators say, Hughes produced a handgun, and the two exchanged gunfire. Hughes was struck, and later died.

“The man who shot him was on the scene when police arrived,” Levy said Saturday. “We had a chance to investigate it.

“We contacted the District Attorney’s office and they made the decision it will be turned over to the grand jury.”

Levy said that the man who shot Hughes — his name has not been released — had not been charged with a crime.
