MOBILE, Alabama — Despite recent controversies involving the Ladd-Peebles Stadium board, the Mobile City Council on Tuesday opted to keep them in charge of the facility.
Several council members said that they voted against the contract with SMG, an international facilities-management firm, because they wanted to have more community involvement in how the stadium is run.
That drew a sharp retort from Bobby Bostwick, a member of Mayor Sam Jones executive staff.
“Community involvement is how we ended up with all those problems out there in the first place,” he said.
- A $3,000 Christmas dinner for the board members and guests.
- Several Christmas gifts for board members paid for with board money and purchased from a former chairman’s store.
- Numerous donations to charitable organizations, some of which had ties to members of the board.
Council members John Williams, William Carroll, Gina Gregory, Reggie Copeland and Bess Rich Voted against the contract to SMG. Councilmen Jermaine Burrell and Fred Richardson voted in favor of the contract.
