HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA – Area Optimist Clubs will hold a banquet Monday night to honor area law enforcement officers as part of national Respect for Law Week.
Coordinated through the Noon Optimist Club in Huntsville, the banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Mayfair Church of Christ in Jones Valley.
Each law enforcement division in Madison County has nominated an officer to receive the “Officer of the Year” award on behalf of all the Huntsville Optimist Clubs, said Dean Jackson, president of the Noon club.
“We’re honoring local police officers who have shown outstanding service,” Jackson said.
Nationally, the Optimist Club created the Respect for Law Week in 1965 and today more than 1,500 Optimist Clubs participate.
According to the national website, the week is intended to motivate communities to “rally against local violence” and “inspire respect for the law among local young people.”
