SILVERHILL, Alabama — Lightning struck an Alabama Power Co. substation near Silverhill this afternoon, knocking out electricity to nearly 62,000 customers in a wide area of  Baldwin County, authorities said.

Representatives of Riviera Utilities and Baldwin EMC, whose customers were affected by the outages, said power had been restored to all affected areas by 4:30 p.m. except for Robertsdale, where electricity was expected to be back on sometime after 6 p.m.

Alabama Power Co. spokeswoman Beth Thomas said the Silverhill substation belongs to Alabama Power but feeds the two Baldwin County utilities.

Power was reported out at one point from Spanish Fort down the Eastern Shore, and down through central Baldwin County to Foley and nearby rural communities.

Riviera Utilities spokesman David Horton said about 42,000 customers lost power this afternoon. Karen Moore, a spokeswoman for Baldwin EMC, said 19,674 customers were without power in communities such as Rosinton, Silverhill, Magnolia Springs, Barnwell, Loxley, Summerdale and Fish River.

Moore said that an unrelated outage on Baldwin EMC’s grid knocked out electricity for about half an hour beginning about 1 p.m. in Gulf Shores. The Silverhill lightning strike occurred about 1:30 p.m., according to Thomas.

Moore said that many Baldwin EMC customers escaped the outage because some of the county’s communities are served by lines that are not owned by Alabama Power.
