Turnout has been extremely low so far in today’s property tax renewal vote in Fairfield.
Residents there are voting on whether to renew a 15-mill property tax for the city’s school system.
As of 2 p.m., just 26 votes had been cast at C.J. Donald Elementary School, one of six polling places in the city. And by 2:30 p.m., just 37 votes had been cast at Glen Oaks Elementary School, and 28 votes had been cast at the Fairfield Municipal Building. officials said.
Tracey Hill, a parent of three children in the Fairfield school system, said she voted in favor of renewing the tax because it will help the school system’s resources and give teachers in the system more security.
The tax, which costs the owner of a $100,000 home $150 a year, is one of two property taxes used to fund the school system. The tax accounts for $900,000 of the system’s $18.3 million fiscal 2011 budget. If not renewed, the tax expires on Oct. 12.
Polls are open until 7 p.m. Other polling places are Fairfield City Hall, Western Hills Mall and Forest Hills Middle School.
