A teacher from the Madison County school system is the 2011-2012 Alabama Teacher of the Year.

Gay F. Barnes, a teacher at Horizon Elementary School , was named the state’s top teacher during an awards program broadcast live on Alabama Public Television Wednesday night.

Marla Hines, an applied physical science teacher at Vestavia Hills High, was selected as the alternate Alabama Teacher of the Year. She will serve as teacher of the year if Barnes, for some reason, cannot fulfill her duties as the state’s top teacher.

As Alabama Teacher of the Year, Barnes will spend the majority of next school year serving as a spokesperson for education and the teaching profession as well as presenting workshops to various groups.

“I’m so honored and so excited to serve as the teacher of the year for the upcoming year,” Barnes said, “and to share the news and spread the word about all the brilliant teachers across the state.”

Barnes will also be the state’s representative for the National Teacher of the Year Award.

Hines said she was “humbled” to be selected alternate teacher of the year.

Video presentations of each of the finalists were played before the winner was announced.

Besides Hines, a second Birmingham area teacher was among the four finalists. Pamela Yau, who teaches a course that emphasizes hands-on math and science at Homewood’s Edgewood Elementary, was also up for the coveted award.

The other finalist was Katherine Pitts, a teacher at Thomasville High School in the Thomasville City school system.
