BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — A man was killed tonight in a fire at his west Birmingham apartment, according to the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.

Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis provided this account:

Firefighters were called to the two-story brick apartment building, which contains only two apartments, at Warrior Road and Avenue S about 7 p.m.

At the time of the fire, a disabled man was asleep in the upstairs bedroom of one of the apartments as his roommate cooked.

“A gentleman was cooking,” Mardis said. “We’re not sure that’s the cause, but that’s what we’re leaning toward.”

As the fire rapidly spread through the apartment, the roommate tried to get the disabled man out of the second story bedroom.

“He was almost overcome by smoke and he ended up jumping out of the window,” Mardis said. The man was not injured.

The roommate and others on the ground below tried to get the disabled man to jump, as well.

“He was unable to escape,” Mardis said of the man killed in the fire.

The apartment where the fire started suffered 75 percent fire damage and 100 percent smoke damage. The adjacent apartment received 30 percent smoke and water damage.

The victim’s name has not been released.
