TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — One of two brothers accused of beating a woman to death with a rock has pleaded guilty.
Timothy Garrison avoided a possible death sentence by pleading guilty to a capital murder charge.
Family members of the victim, 69-year-old Yvenna Gilbert, agreed to accept the plea, which carries a sentence of life in prison with no possibility of parole.
The 26-year-old Garrison pleaded guilty to committing murder during a burglary and committing murder during a robbery at Gilbert’s home in Tuscaloosa County on April 12, 2008.
Because it is a capital case, jurors still must hear the evidence and decide on his guilt.
The case against Garrison’s brother, 24-year-old Phillip Garrison, is pending.
