HOMEWOOD, Alabama — Firefighters from Homewood, Vestavia Hills and Mountain Brook have been on the scene of a massive fire at an abandoned Homewood apartment building that was reported shortly before 7 p.m.
One building of the Magnolia Park apartment complex on Valley Avenue was virtually destroyed by the fire, said Homewood Fire Battalion Chief Mike Anastasia. The fire is under control, but there are still flames burning inside the building. Anastasia said firefighters are going to let the roofline burn to try to extinguish the rest of the fire.
No firefighters were injured, but officials were unsure if anyone was inside the building. A chain-link fence surrounds the complex to keep people out.
“We know we’ve had trespassers. We’re trying to make sure as best we can nobody was inside,” Anastasia said.
In addition to help from firefighters from Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills, Homewood called in some of their off-duty firefighters to help with the blaze as well.
