COASTAL ALABAMA — Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a time of remembrance for those who have died in service to our nation. First observed May 30, 1868, Memorial Day ceremonies today often expand that theme to recognize past and present military veterans as well as active-duty members of the military.

Events planned for Memorial Day 2011 in Mobile and Baldwin counties include:

FRIDAY

  • The city of Fairhope will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday at City Hall. The event will host representatives from each branch of service and will include a flag dedication ceremony. For more information or to participate in the ceremony, call 251-990-0218.

  • Campbell Hardware & Sporting Goods in Robertsdale will host a Memorial Day weekend event supporting American war veterans. A portion of all purchases made Friday and Saturday will benefit Honor Flight of South Alabama, which sends World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorial that commemorates their service. On Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Campbell’s will host a “meet and greet” inviting customers and area veterans to learn more about the Honor Flight program.
  • Roger Jones will conduct the Baldwin Pops Band in a free concert to celebrate Memorial Day weekend. The performance will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at Foley’s Heritage Park.

SUNDAY

  • A Baldwin Pops Concert will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Henry George Park along Mobile Bay, and a flag retirement ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. Monday, hosted by Boy Scout Troop No. 47 at its Single Tax Campsite off Baldwin County 13, Fairhope. For more information, call 251-990-0218.

MONDAY

  • The William F. Green State Veterans Home will hold its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday on the front portico of the veterans home at 300 Faulkner Drive in Bay Minette.
  • Vietnam veteran Joseph G. Law will be the keynote speaker. There will be a tolling of the bell for deceased veterans and a white rose ceremony for their families. Members of the Baldwin County High School ROTC will post the colors, taps will be played by state Rep. Randy Davis and a slide show of the Veterans will be presented.

For more information, contact Shelly Bates at 251-937-9881.

  • American Legion Fowl River Post 250 at 10950 Dauphin Island Parkway in Theodore will honor veterans and pay tribute to each branch of the military at noon Monday. Admission is free and festivities include food, music, a flag ceremony, taps, a rifle volley and a guest speaker. Fore more information, call 251-973-1116.
  • Fort Morgan is offering free admission to active-duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day, Sept. 5. Active-duty military includes Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and active duty National Guard and Reserve members.
