MOBILE, Alabama — A man who walked into the University of South Alabama Medical Center suffering from multiple gunshot wounds Sunday afternoon has been charged in the earlier robbery of the Carmike 14 movie theater, police said today.
A second man has also been arrested in connection with the crime, police said, and officers were searching for a third suspect today.
According to police spokesman Officer Christopher Levy, 19-year-old Desmon Norwood walked into the hospital at noon, about an hour after the robbery. He matched the description of at least one of the robbery suspects, at whom a manager had fired shots and chased off the property, Levy said.
Later in the day, police apprehended 21-year-old William Austin.
Both men are charged with first-degree robbery. Austin was booked into Mobile County Metro Jail, and Norwood will be transported to the jail when he is released from the hospital, Levy said.
According to police, three men walked into the theater, at 4900 Government Blvd., and waited for the manager to arrive.
They spotted him, police said, and forced him into an office and demanded he open a safe. But when the manager couldn’t open the safe, the robbers stole his personal property and fled.
The manager, too, left — to retrieve a handgun from his vehicle and pursue the robbers. He fired several shots at them, some of which struck a nearby apartment complex.
At least one robber was injured, police said, but no bystanders were struck by the bullets.
Police did not provide a description of the third suspect, other than he drove the others from the scene. Said Levy: “We know there was a third suspect because someone had to drive.”
