HOMEWOOD, Alabama — Miss Alabama 2011 was crowned this weekend at Samford University in the annual pageant that determines who will represent the state in the Miss America competition.

Birmingham News writer/photographer Matthew Busch recounts the story of the pageant and the young women participants in this behind-the-scenes video story.

The ultimate winner was Courtney Porter, 24 and an Auburn University graduate from Clay. She will represent Alabama in the Miss America pageant in Las Vegas in January. She entered the state pageant as Miss Leeds Area.

Forty-eight contestants began the hunt for the title of Miss Alabama. Between Wednesday’s opening day and Saturday night’s crowning, the young women were tested in talent, evening wear and swimsuits. And as the video reports, they bonded during the shared experience.
