MOBILE, Ala. — Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich today announced that she is investigating Prichard’s failure to pay pensioners.
“My office has received numerous complaints about the Prichard Pension Fund and the fact that payments to retirees have stopped,” she said in a prepared statement. “It is in everyone’s best interest that this matter be thoroughly reviewed by an outside agency.”
Rich sought to tamp down expectations that the probe would “in any way solve the current problem and thereby restore payments to the retirees.”
City Council President Herman Towner said he did not know about the investigation until a reporter told him this afternoon. He said the blame for the pension crisis lies with the pension board. He said the city has continued to make regular payments into the fund.
“She’ll find out just what we’ve been saying all along,” he said. “The city has been making its payments every month as required by law.”
