Today’s high was 97. The record for July 9 is 100, recorded in 1881.
Sunday: Scattered showers, otherwise mostly sunny. Highs in the mid- to upper 90s. Lows in the mid- to upper 70s. Chance of rain 40 percent. Heat index near 105.
Monday: Isolated storm activity. Highs in the mid- to upper 90s. Lows in the mid- to upper 70s. Chance of rain 30 percent.
Forecast by WKRG meteorologist Jonathan Owens:
An unsettled and hot weather pattern will continue for the foreseeable future here along the Gulf Coast. Spotty showers and thunderstorms will develop each afternoon. Some storms could become severe, with the typical summertime risks of gusty winds, small hail, frequent lightning and localized street flooding.  The highest risk of rain will be from roughly lunchtime to dinnertime. The odds of rain are 30%, so two out of three places will stay dry each day.
Afternoon highs will reach well into the 90s for our area. When humidity is factored in, it will feel close to or over 100 degrees outside. Be sure to take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water.
The tropics continue to be quiet for the time being. July is typically not one of the more-active months. Statistically, activity usually ramps up during August and peaks in September, because that’s when the warmest sea surface temperatures are found in the Atlantic.
