GARDENDALE, Alabama – A 19-year-old man was killed Thursday night in a three-car crash in Gardendale.
Cody Franklin Rutledge, of Mt. Olive, was pronounced dead on the scene just after 8 p.m., said Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Phillip Russell.
Witnesses told authorities Rutledge was driving northbound on Main Street in Gardendale when he ran a red light. His 1998 Toyota 4-Runner was clipped by a 2009 Mazda 6 that was traveling eastbound on Fieldstown Road. The collision caused Rutledge to lose control. His SUV flipped several times in the intersection and rolled across the top of an oncoming 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse which was stopped in a turn lane.
Rutledge was not wearing a seatbelt, authorities said, and partially ejected. The SUV came to a rest on top of him.
