MONTGOMERY, Alabama — Plans to redraw Alabama’s seven congressional districts and eight state Board of Education districts in time for next year’s elections sailed through their first legislative challenges Wednesday and face more debate Thursday.

The plans would redraw maps, based on the 2010 census, to put almost exactly the same number of people in each congressional district as are in the districts now and about the same number of people, within a few thousand, in each school board district.

Review committees in the Senate and House of Representatives approved the redistricting plans unchanged from the way the Legislature’s 22-member reapportionment committee drew them last week.

Rep. Jim McClendon, R-Springville, said he plans to ask the full House today to pass House Bill 621, the school board redistricting plan he is sponsoring. If passed by the House today, it would face review by the Senate next week.

Sen. Gerald Dial, R-Lineville, said he plans to ask the full Senate today to pass Senate Bill 484, the congressional redistricting plan he is sponsoring. If passed by the Senate today, it would face review in the House next week.

Both men predicted the Legislature would give final approval to a school board and a congressional redistricting plan by June 9, the last day of the regular session.
