MOBILE, Alabama – Alan H. Turner II will be the new chief executive officer of the United Way of Southwest Alabama, according to a Tuesday announcement. He most recently served as president and CEO of the United Way of West Tennessee.
The 41-year-old Turner officially assumes his new role on Aug. 15, replacing Angelo Miller, who resigned in January after serving as executive director since 1995.
“We have a great opportunity to make positive impacts with the United Way,” Turner said in an interview with the Press-Register. “I really want to become a part of the community.”
“Alan is a rising star in the United Way profession and we will all benefit from his experience and leadership,” said Joseph F. Busta Jr., board chairman of the local United Way.
During Turner’s 3 years guiding the United Way of West Tennessee, the Jackson, Tennessee-based agency experienced a 4.4 percent increase in its annual workplace fundraising campaign, according to the news release announcing Turner’s new position.
The agency’s service area grew from 10 to 14 counties.
In southwest Alabama, Turner said he hopes to focus “on community impact goals.”
He said he wants the agency to “look for other opportunities where United Way might make a difference.”
“We need to look for different funding streams” and “look for sharing resources with other United Way” agencies, he said.
The United Way of Southwest Alabama supports 57 social-service agencies in Mobile, Clarke and Washington counties.
Turner previously was executive director of the Association of New York State Youth Bureaus, which works with more than 2 million young people and families to promote social, physical and emotional well-being. In New York, he helped secure more than $85 million in funds for the bureau system.
Turner, who served in the U.S. Army Reserves, earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Daemen College in Amherst, N.Y., and is finishing his master’s degree in business administration at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee.
Joyce Collier, the retired executive director of Lifelines Family Counseling, has served as interim leader of the United Way of Southwest Alabama during the search for a new CEO.
