OPELIKA, Alabama — Health officials are working to identify the reason why 4 children have been hospitalized with bacterial infections.
The Alabama Department of Public Health is conducting tests of water samples at the Opelika SportsPlex and Aquatics Center. Officials say they believe the 4 hospitalized children may have contracted an illness after visiting the center’s Splash Park facility.
Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller says water samples were taken from the SportsPlex’s filter system, reservoir areas and nozzles and sent to the Alabama Health Department in Montgomery for testing. The facility was notified Wednesday that the results came back negative for bacterial contamination.
Sam Bailey, director of the Opelika Parks & Recreation Department, says he hopes the facility will reopen Friday.
