HOMEWOOD, Alabama — Hundreds of folks gathered at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church at 1720 Oxmoor Road in Homewood today for its 62nd annual Fourth of July Festival

The event began at 10 a.m. and concludes at 3 p.m. By the end of the day about 2,000 people are expected to attend. A garage sale called Trash & Treasures held in conjunction to the festival inside the church gym concludes at 4 p.m., and will continue with a 50 percent off sale Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. said Trash & Treasurers coordinator Melanie Falconer.

The festival includes barbecue plates and other food/drinks for sale, a karaoke music stage, bingo games, a cake sale, and a children’s area with activities such as a bean bag toss and dunking booth.

The Rev, Martin Mueller, pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows since 1988, said the festival has grown every year and is the church’s biggest fundraiser.

“It supports the church (K-8) school, our church building fund and our Catholic Charity Fund,” Mueller said. “The event has become sort of a homecoming for us. Lots of families that moved away come back each year for the festival.”
