ROSINTON, Alabama — A 48-year-old Pensacola man died Sunday afternoon after diving into the Styx River in Baldwin County during a tubing outing with friends, authorities said.

Baldwin County Coroner  Stan Vinson said that the identity of the man was being withheld pending notification of relatives.

Vinson said the man was accompanying friends on the Styx River when he got out of his tube, climbed a tree and dived into the river. The man floated to the surface, and his friends realized he was not breathing, Vinson said.

The friends started CPR as they moved downriver to the Styx River Shooting Center just north of Interstate 10, and volunteer firefighters met the group with a four-wheel flatbed all-terrain vehicle to bring the man to a waiting ambulance, Vinson said.

The ambulance crew tried to revive him but could not, and the man was pronounced dead just before 2:30 p.m., according to Vinson.

The body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for a autopsy, which will probably take place Tuesday, Vinson said.

He added that preliminary investigation indicated the man did not drown, but may have struck his head or neck on the bottom or on a submerged object.
