SARALAND, Alabama — A 27-year-old Mobile woman who police said bolted from a shoplifting arrest in Saraland, leaving her 5-year-old son behind, surrendered Wednesday evening, authorities said.

Saraland police spokesman Sgt. Leroy Smith said warrants had been signed against Alicia Anna Andry charging third-degree robbery and reckless endangerment. She turned herself in at Mobile County Metro Jail shortly before 7 p.m.

Smith said that on June 18, Andry was being detained at the Saraland Walmart after being accused of shoplifting, but she forced her way out of custody of store security while police were on the way.

According to Smith, Andry’s 5-year-old son was trying to get into her car as she was attempting to escape, and another adult grabbed the child to keep him from getting injured as Andry sped off through the parking lot.

Andry was gone by the time police arrived, Smith said.

Once Andry was identified, warrants were signed against her June 23. Smith said Andry called Saraland police several times Wednesday before her picture ran on the evening TV news, and it was shortly after that she decided to turn herself in.

Andry was released from jail on $4,000 bail about an hour and a half after she surrendered, and she faces a hearing Friday morning in Mobile County District Court, according to jail records.

Andry’s son, who was not injured, was turned over to relatives, Smith said.
