MOBILE, Alabama — City Councilman Reggie Copeland is considering scuttling a road-widening project in his district that has been planned for years and would be paid for predominantly with federal money.
An item on Tuesday’s City Council agenda called for the city to provide $75,000 to match $261,000 in federal funding that would pay for an engineering plan to widen McGregor Avenue between Airport Boulevard and Dauphin Street, said the city’s engineer, Nick Amberger.
Copeland had the item shelved.
He said that residents in the area did not want to see the street widened because it wouldn’t address the problem of frequent traffic backups, only increase the number of cars on the street.
The real problem, he said, is the lack of a right-turn lane onto Airport Boulevard. Until that is addressed, he said, cars will always stack up on McGregor, regardless of how many lanes there are.
He said that he would meet with his constituents to discuss the matter before deciding whether to support funding the widening effort.
