TILLMAN’S CORNER, Alabama — A man armed with a machete robbed a Tillman’s Corner motel this afternoon but turned himself in to Mobile police about an hour later, spokesman Officer Christopher Levy said.
No one was injured in the incident.
The suspect, Joseph Leroy Dorrough, 30, was charged with first-degree robbery and taken to Mobile County Metro Jail, where he was held tonight without bail, according to jail records.
Levy said a man went into the office of the Super 8 motel at 5676 Tillman’s Corner Parkway shortly before 4:45 p.m., pulled out the machete and robbed the clerk before getting in a gray pickup truck and driving away.
It was about an hour later that police got a call from Dorrough, telling them to meet him at the Dollar General store at 5808 U.S. 90 at Theodore-Dawes Road so he could turn himself in.
Officers went to the store and took Dorrough into custody, Levy said.
Levy said he was unsure what motivated Dorrough to surrender so soon after the robbery. “Perhaps he realized he messed up really bad,” Levy said.
Dorrough will appear Thursday morning in Mobile County District Court.
