BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — A three-vehicle accident on the Elton B. Stephens Expressway caused traffic backups this morning, which have since been cleared.

A 9:30 a.m. wreck occurred when a driver going south in the left lane hit a guardrail near the Highland Avenue tunnel, then came off the rail and hit another car. Those two cars then crashed into a third vehicle, said Birmingham Police Officer L.T. Wilson.

The driver of the first car was transported to a hospital with head trauma, Wilson said.

Earlier Saturday, at 1:15 a.m., a Chevrolet Suburban traveling on I-65 South at a high rate of speed hit a guardrail at the Sixth Avenue exit, causing the driver to be ejected from the vehicle, Wilson said.

That driver was taken to UAB Hospital where he was placed in the Trauma and Burn Intensive Care Unit, Wilson said.
