BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Four hours after a black bear was spotted in South Roebuck, dozens of Birmingham police along with city firefighters, state wildlife workers and Birmingham Zoo officials remain on the scene as the bear continues to elude capture.
“We’re not going to give up on the search,” Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams told reporters.
“We’ve set up a perimeter,” Williams said. “We believe he’s inside it.”
Though police said the bears are not usually aggressive, Williams asked people living nearby to use caution.
“We want everyone to be on alert. If you don’t have to be outside, stay inside,” he said.
One of the two police officers to first see the bear — who would give only the name Officer Baker — said police were told this might be the same bear that was recently spotted in Trussville, but additional details about that sighting were not available tonight.
“It was just hanging out,” Baker said of the bear.
This is the second bear spotted running at large in Birmingham this month. A black bear was captured in Ensley less than three weeks ago and taken to the Birmingham Zoo.
