SEMINOLE, Alabama — A wildfire that has burned more than 1,500 acres in Seminole in the last week was again contained Saturday by Alabama and Florida forestry crews and volunteer firefighters, officials said.

The fire, believed to have been started by lightning strikes Sunday, broke out of its contained area north of U.S. 90 on Friday, Stanley Anderson of the Alabama Forestry Commission said.

Residents removed trailers and recreational vehicles from a hunting camp as the flames spread toward the site, but the fire was contained before reaching the property, Anderson said.

No other structures were threatened, but smoke from the fire reduced visibility on U.S. 90 and Interstate 10 near the Alabama-Florida state line, Anderson said. He said smoke from the blaze could be seen as far south as Orange Beach.

Anderson said the fire has burned up to 1,800 acres. He said that while the flames were contained Saturday, firefighters were watching the fire as winds shifted.
