Testimony has ended for today in the capital murder trial of a man accused of killing a Pelham police officer, with a DNA expert testifying about blood samples taken from the driver’s side door and the inside console of a car authorities say the defendant was driving on the night of the slaying.

Carl Mauterer, a DNA expert with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, said he could testify with a high degree of confidence that the samples matched the DNA of Pelham police Officer Philip Davis.

Mauterer was the final witness today in the capital murder trial of Bart Wayne Johnson, who is accused of shooting Davis during a traffic stop on Interstate 65 at about midnight Dec. 3, 2009.

Johnson has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental defect.

The trial is expected resume on Monday at 9 a.m. in the Shelby County Courthouse in Columbiana. The prosecution is expected to call more witnesses.
