MONTGOMERY, Alabama — Six candidates have qualified to run for two vacant Birmingham-area seats in the Alabama House.
The District 45 seat became vacant with the death last month of Republican Rep. Owen Drake of Leeds.
Qualifying for the Aug. 30 Republican Primary by today’s deadline were Drake’s brother, Leeds businessman Dickie Drake, Irondale Mayor Tommy Joe Alexander and Michael Sumners of Irondale, vice president of Richardson Construction. Qualifying to run as a Democrat was former Miss Alabama and Miss America 1st runner-up Paige Parnell of Leeds.
Qualifying to run as Republicans for the District 48 seat were former state representative and Jefferson County Commissioner Jim Carns and retired government employee Craig Sanderson. That primary will also be Aug. 30.
No Democrats qualified for the seat vacated when Republican Rep. Greg Canfield of Vestavia Hills was named Alabama Development Office director.
