BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Alabama state Rep. Paul DeMarco, R-Homewood said Tuesday he has asked the Alabama Department of Examiners of Public Accounts to review spending by court-appointed receiver John S. Young who is overseeing the Jefferson County sewer department, Birmingham News writer Barnett Wright reported.
DeMarco, chairman of the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives as well as chairman the Jefferson County House delegation, asked for a breakdown of expenditures and “any documentation for request for proposals for contracts of any nature including personal services contracts” issued by the sewer department beginning Oct. 1, the start of the fiscal year. “There has to be some accountability in place,” said DeMarco.
In the online community, a number of commenters were quickly and sharply critical of DeMarco’s actions but others thanked him for taking action. Read some of what people are saying:
• “First let me say, I think John Notsoyoung is just a collection agency agent for the Bankers and has only the $500.00 per hour for himself in mind. Having said that, Mr. DIMarco, does your insight not extend beyond the tip of your nose? Can’t you see that most of us reading this article are seeing that this little “request” of yours is just going to cost taxpayers more money? If there is going to be audits taking place, I think they need to start close to your door mat where all the pig slopping takes place and has for long before John Notsoyoung flew in on his Majic Carpet!!!!” — thnkoutloud
• “Thank you, Mr. Demarco, for throwing another (monkey) wrench into the mess. So, how much will your audit cost us taxpayers, and what are your political aspirations?” — 5ptsbob
• “What’s wrong with Demarco asking for some transparency? Better to let Young spend the money freely without any accountability?” — Walt_Kowalski
• “Thank you Paul DeMarco for stepping up and asking for transparency. Too many people sit around and complain without taking action to do something about it. Thank you for being one of the good guys. I truly hope you find a way to end this $500 an hour scam artist’s work here in Birmingham. An audit will cost pennies compared to John Young’s work.” — bubbacahaba
